Steve Zerby

Hello, my name is Steve Zerby. I'm a 40-year-old self-taught restoration carpenter living in the tiny town of Westford (Pop.450), NY. That's in Central New York, about Midway between Albany and Binghamton. I'm originally from Minneapolis, MN. My education is in photojournalism and graphic design, with a year of architecture school thrown in for good measure. After more than ten years as a photographer and an art director at various newspapers and magazines, I decided to entertain my fascination with old houses on a professional basis. For the past 5 years I've been the sole proprietor of a restoration carpentry and design/build company called Meetinghouse Restoration.

The loves of my life are my partner, Joanne Tobey, my dogs, Jamie and Scooter Pie, and my cats, Shrinky, Tessie, Moogie, Gumby, Pokie, Squeaky, Mannie, and Bart. We all live in about one fourth of a Greek-Revival-style structure that was originally built as a Federal-style church in 1826.

The other three fourths of it are in a constant state of demolition. I promise my wife that I will take enough time out from writing for this magazine and for my local newspaper column that I will get the kitchen built this summer. Really.
